The folks in Dusk had the most surviving materials, so they built a city and have a bustling economy. Multiple ships landed (sometimes crashed) on Eleusis, and cultures set in quickly and pretty irrevocably. It’s my second “generation ship leaves a doomed Earth” book in a row, but this one was better. There were some really cool things going on, and a couple of fascinating characters, and an ending that was satisfying without wrapping things up too neatly. I feel like Tim Gunn telling a Project Runway contestant that they had too many good ideas and should have saved a couple for the next challenge. But it feels like a debut from an author I would read more of. Everything I can think of to say about this one makes it sound like I didn’t like it, but it really wasn’t bad! This image is certified as symbolic when Mia later explains how it is representative of the fact that sometimes change requires burning everything down and completely starting over from scratch. In time, however, the green would not only return, but the entire prairie would become more fertile and new growth make the results of the fire impossible even to imagine. At one point, Mia tells Izzy about a time in Nebraska when she witnessed the devastating effects of a prairie fire which left everything scorched and turned every last inch of green black. Mia becomes an enormous influence upon the already rebellious Izzy, primarily in the form of directing and channeling that energy.
